Residents are urged to be cautious when using Facebook marketplace to buy and sell items, this after the tragic hijacking and murder of Glencairn businessman Ben Tuzee.

The 51-year-old, who went to deliver a TV set in Nyanga after having sold it on marketplace, died after he was stabbed multiple times on Tuesday 6 September.

Manenberg police spokesperson Capt Ian Bennett said Tuzee and his niece were stopped by a man who claimed his father had bought the item.

“A 51-year-old male suffered multiple fatal stab wounds in Browns Farm, Nyanga, today Tuesday 6 September at 09:45.

“It is alleged that the 51-year-old male and his 33-year-old niece, from Glencairn, came to Browns farm to deliver a television set which they sold on market place.

“As they entered the Browns Farm area, Msenge Street, they were stopped by a male who indicated that his father bought the item.”

Bennet added that while the pair sat in the vehicle, they were attacked by two assailants.

“Two armed men approached them while they sat in the car and smashed the windows forcing the 51-year-old and his niece out of the vehicle.

“The 51-year-old male tried fighting off the perpetrators but suffered several stab wounds to his upper body.”

The suspects later fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.

According to police, the local community assisted the victims to a medical facility, but it was too late.

“They were assisted by the residents of Browns farm and rushed to the local medical facility.

“The 51-year-old male succumbed to his injuries. His niece was traumatised by the incident but safe,” said Bennett.

The vehicle has since been recovered in Dyokani Street and the suspects remain at large.

Police are cautioning the public not to enter high crime areas such as the Nyanga precinct which is a hotspot for murder and hijackings.

“It has been noticed with concern that citizens of other communities enter the Nyanga precinct under the auspices of delivering items sold and bought on market place. It might seem as if these vulnerable people enter the area not taking into account their safety.
