Wind conditions have aided the quick spread of the fire.

“Only a single derelict building was damaged last night around 20:00 on the grounds of the SA Navy,” said City of Cape Town spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo.

Five firefighters sustained injuries and two were taken to hospital.

Three choppers continue to waterbomb the affected area, assisting 300 ground staff.

“We would like to commend the firefighting efforts of not only our City staff, but those from Table Mountain National Park, NCC Wildfires, Working on Fire, Volunteer Wildfire Services and Disaster Risk Management volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the night to keep the community safe,” Tyhalibongo said. “We would like to thank the residents and corporates who donated refreshments to staff on the front line.”
