CAPE TOWN – The Fish Hoek Valley Museum is overhauling its operating hours to visitors to accommodate busy schedules, with new weekday schedules and opening on the last Saturday of the month, starting at the end of this month, 31 January.
Addressing visitor concerns
The move is in response to feedback from residents who found the Tuesday to Friday morning schedule, 09:30-12:30, too restrictive. “This has limited the number of people able to visit,” said museum curator Sue Maude, prompting the 2026 schedule overhaul.

New visitor-friendly hours
The revamped schedule now includes Tuesday mornings, 09:30 to 12:30, Wednesday afternoons, 13:00 to 16:00, and Thursday mornings, 09:30 to 12:30, the last Saturday of each month 10:00 to 14:00. It will be closed Mondays and Fridays.
Special appeal to youth
The museum particularly encourages schoolchildren to visit during Wednesday afternoon hours, offering hands-on experiences including an archaeological “dig” sandpit where kids can become junior archaeologists.
Local treasures await
Visitors can explore ancient stone tools that once littered the valley, view copies of rare rock art from Peers Cave — Cape Town’s only known rock art site — examine historical artifacts including the valley’s last remaining whale bone fence post, and test their knowledge by guessing a cannonball’s weight.
Located at 59 Central Circle, Fish Hoek (right of the civic centre parking lot), the museum offers fascinating insights into local history for all ages.
