Fish Hoek police are urging residents to come forward and report any incidents of robbery and muggings taking place at the beach.
Last week, in a social media post, a resident claimed to have witnessed two elderly people being mugged on Jager’s Walk. However, according to police spokesperson WO Peter Middleton, no case was reported.
“This office can inform that no such case has been reported to police related to the social media post.
“This office wishes to inform that social media posts are not always accurate relating to when the incident occurs and sometimes it’s an incident just reposted.”
Four incidents
However, Middleton added that at least four robberies at Fish Hoek Beach have been reported since the start of the year.
“Fish Hoek has had four incidents of robbery on the beachfront this year. Three of these cases were on Jager’s Walk and in one case an arrest was made by the Fish Hoek police.
In a social media post last week, a resident claimed to have witnessed an elderly couple being robbed on Jager’s Walk.
“Just witnessed a mugging on Jager’s Walk,” the post read. “The two youngsters stole a phone from an older couple and sprinted away… other walkers tried to stop the runners but were unsuccessful. Please be alert on this walk, even when it is busy.”
Meanwhile, police have requested that victims report cases in order to apply resources to affected areas.
In a separate incident, posted on social media in March, an elderly couple from the United Kingdom (UK) were allegedly targeted. “Another mugging on the Fish Hoek catwalk today at the end near Sunny Cove around lunchtime,” the post read. “His wallet was gone and he was hurt and badly shaken.”
According to a social media post, police responded swiftly to the incident at the time.
“There should be warning signs not to walk with any valuables at all but please be careful there. That’s the third one that I know of in just a few weeks and I’m sure there are more.”
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the owner of a food truck was allegedly robbed in Main Road, Muizenberg last week.
