CAPE TOWN-A 64-year-old garden club is inviting the community to showcase their most creative floral arrangements this year.
The event is organised by Fish Hoek Garden Club and will host its annual flower show and Garden Expo on Saturday 1 November from 09:30 to 14:00 at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre.

The main hall will feature a brilliant display of cut flowers and floral arrangements, while potted plants,
succulents, herbs and vegetables will be showcased throughout the venue.
Plants from members’ gardens, local nurseries and private growers will be available for purchase.
“Various vendors will offer garden-related merchandise including ceramics, jams and marmalade,
breads, wrought iron garden decor, vegetables, wooden planters, and macrame hanging baskets,” said spokesperson Sally Britten.
The Girl Guides will sell boerewors rolls in the courtyard, while the Minor Hall will host tea sales alongside cut flowers and gardening books from Tears.
CLUB HISTORY
Fish Hoek Garden Club was established in 1961 by a group of ladies from St. Margaret’s Church, with
Margorie Mair serving as the founder.
The club has maintained community engagement for over six decades.
It originally hosted two annual flower shows – Spring and Summer events – but now focuses on a single summer flower show in September or late October.
This year’s date represents a slight scheduling adjustment.
In 2018, the club expanded the traditional flower show format by inviting vendors to offer gardening-related merchandise, transforming the event into a comprehensive garden expo.
REGULAR ACTIVITIES
Approximately 60 members meet on the third Wednesday evening of each month, excluding July and
December.
The meetings feature speakers on gardening topics, environmental issues, fynbos and climate change.
Recent presentations have included talks from Shark Spotters and Baboon Management, reflecting the
club’s interest in broader environmental concerns.
The club also arranges outings to private gardens throughout the Far South and Southern Suburbs.
Annual membership fee is R70 per person, while visitors pay R20 to attend meetings. Children under 16 years old enter free.
All flowers, both exotic and indigenous, as well as potted plants, fruit, and vegetables displayed at the show are grown in members’ gardens.
Regular competition winners include: Alison James, Trevor Joseph, Anne MacLeod, and Sue Wilkes, particularly noted for excellence in the decorative arrangement section.
The competitive element encourages members to develop their horticultural skills while providing
inspiration for visiting gardening enthusiasts.
The event promises a comprehensive display of horticultural excellence alongside opportunities for
plant purchases and garden-related shopping.
The annual flower show and garden expo serves as the organisation’s primary community outreach event, showcasing decades of gardening expertise while supporting local vendors and Girl Guide fundraising efforts.
