Teams from all over the Metro will battle it out at the inaugural Salaludien Davids Cup, presented by Barcelona Spurs Sporting Club.
Officially launched on Friday 13 October, the tournament will kick off this weekend at the Portland Sports Complex.
Yumna Arendse, the club’s public relations officer says the u-18 tournament will feature 32 teams from areas including Athlone, Manenberg, Hanover Park, Gugulethu, Hout Bay, Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein, Mandalay, Bonteheuwel and Khayelitsha.
“The competition will bring together athletes with great cultural diversity, in what will be a very enriching personal and competitive experience. With this we are promoting our brand as it is our 1st tournament in the existence of our club,” she says.
“Sporting Club Barcelona Spurs, commonly referred to as Barcelona and colloquially known as Barça, is a local community football club based in Tafelsig.”
The club was established last year by a group of former members of well-established clubs in the Mitchell’s Plain region. It has since become a symbol of hope for the community.
Currently, the club has 172 juniors and 52 seniors registered in age groups under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 19 with a first team and super league team.
With their motto, “Know your worth”, the club aims to promote sport as a means for social change in the community.
“Our vision is prosperity, achievement and getting the youth off the streets that so easily falls to gangsterism and drugs. Our aim is to get 100% of the youth off the streets and occupied, by showing talent they might not even know they have. Even if we keep four kids out of 10 from doing harm to themselves or others, we have achieved one of the goals that Barca SC stands for,” says Arendse.
A total of R22 500 in cash and prizes are up for grabs in four sections.
The tournament kicks off at 16:00 on Friday 20 October, 09:00 on Saturday 21 October, with another day of action on Sunday 22 October, also starting at 09:00.
Entry is R5 for children, R10 for adults and R10 for cars, payable at the gate.
