Staff and animals at Tears Animal Rescue’s cattery experienced a close call when a veld fire came dangerously close to enclosures last week, forcing the swift evacuation of 140 cats.
Wendy Scheepers, marketing manager at Tears, says with at least one fire coming close to home at Wenga Farm each year, they are looking to implement fire safety measures.
“We are planning a better fire solution including a firebreak and alien clearing, among other improvements.”
On Monday 14 November, the community and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, fire services, Fish Hoek Lions Club and other emergency services sprang into action to help evacuate the hundreds of cats during the fire.
“A huge thank you to everyone for their help during and after the fire on our cattery location at Wenga Farm.
“Everyone is safe and has been checked by the Tears Veterinary Hospital. The cats are unsure and a bit overwhelmed but you can see a sense of relief at being back in a familiar place.
“We’ve also set up a donation portal to raise funds to help us better fireproof this property. Fire is a reality in our area. We’ve been assisted in the past with firebreaks and alien clearing but we’d like to do more to assure the safety and well-being of our cats and kittens.”
