What was meant to be just a normal Saturday turned into a dream come true for a Kewtown father and son after they won tickets to see the much-anticipated sold-out Springboks vs All Black Rugby Championship Test at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 7 September.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis organised a competition offering two tickets to lucky winners who posted a photo in their Springbok attire.

Former Kensington residents and Springbok fanatics Albert Matthews and his son Malachi (7) were selected as the lucky winners. They joined thousands of fans as they watched the Springboks claim an 18-12 victory over the All Blacks on Saturday.

Matthews tells People’s Post: “During the Rugby World Cup last year, my son became a Springbok fanatic. One of his desires was to go and watch the game in Cape Town. But the ticket prices were too expensive”.

He decided to try his luck, but could not imagine winning.

Announcing the winner via Facebook on Thursday 5 September Hill-Lewis wrote: “Congrats to Albert Matthews and his beautiful family for winning tickets to watch the Bokke vs All Blacks in Cape Town. He does amazing community work in Hanover Park and Mitchells Plain empowering youth and he’s a proud Capetonian.”

Matthews says:

“I had an absent father when I grew up. He was caught up in drugs. Now I have the opportunity to do better. Getting to experience this with my son meant so much. Bonding with my son is a memory we will have for the rest of our lives”.

“We drove to town and got on the MyCiTi bus at the convention centre. When we got in someone recognised us as the winners of the competition and gave my son a SA flag.”

Matthews says his son could not contain his excitement. “My son was awake at 6:00 already ready to watch the game. It was a great experience. I was more interested in the expression on my son’s face than I was watching the game. For me, that was the highlight. Someone from the mayor’s office came to check on us. The Bokke winning was just another marvelous experience.”
