Born from the creative union with his cousin, guitarist Allan Faull, Falling Mirror burst onto the music scene in 1978, carving out a unique space in Cape Town’s vibrant rock landscape. The band’s 1986 single, “Johnny Calls The Chemist,” and its eponymous album remain iconic, alongside celebrated works like “Zen Boulders” and “The Storming Of The Loft.” Marais’ distinctive voice and lyrical prowess were instrumental in shaping the band’s sound and enduring legacy.

Andrew Hendricks, a close friend who deeply understood Marais’ complexities, shared a poignant reflection: “Nielen was a brilliant yet deeply complex individual. His music often carried a sinister edge, reflecting his own battles with mental health. Despite the difficulties and addiction to medication, his genius shone through. I saw both the good and the bad sides of him and came to understand the real extent of his mental health issues.

“His behaviour was never intentional; he was highly intelligent, a gifted writer and a creative force. What he needed most was a friend. I first met him in 2012 when he was homeless, and for years, my family and I supported him in every way we could. While many appreciated his music and celebrity, I helped because of the person he was.

“My wife and I provided care and guidance, ensuring he was presentable and well-cared-for, and we discussed everything from politics to philosophy. It was a role that went beyond mere friendship – we acted like family to him, keeping him from the streets and helping him be his best.”

Terence McCullagh a fan of Falling Mirror said on Facebook “One of the most underrated bands ever. I hope one day the world discovers their music. Nielen will be sadly missed”.

As the music community and fans mourn the loss of Marais, details regarding a memorial service will be shared once his family finalises arrangements. His passing leaves a notable void in the South African music scene, a testament to his enduring influence and the ultimate contribution he made to rock music in the country.
