Fire and rescue services attended to the electrical explosion in Nuttall Road.

An underground electrical explosion occurred in Observatory yesterday, which ripped open part of the pavement in Nuttall Road, causing slight damage to a parked car.

Residents explained they had heard a loud bang just after 15:00.

A business owner in the area, who did not wish to be named, said: “It just came from under the pavement. We were inside. There were two blasts and a lot of smoke and then the power went out. It definitely came from an underground cable. But we can’t see anything. The fire department opened the pavement up because the tar on it erupted.”

A resident, Patric Solomons, explained what he heard.

“I was busy working and I could hear a loud noise. It went off twice. The one was underground, the other opened up the pavement.”

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City’s Fire and Rescue Services, confirmed the incident and said emergency services responded to the call.

“The crew from Salt River responded and found it was an underground electrical cable that had caused the loud noise and damage.”

He added one vehicle was slightly damaged on the passenger side.

“No injuries were reported immediately,” he concluded. “The City’s electricity department is also on scene.”
