The Sunsets and Waterfalls Foundation (SWF) treated 15 girls from Retreat, Steenberg and Steurhof to a one-night empowerment camp as a means of giving back to the community.
Toni Erasmus, SWF co-founder, said the event was held at Rondevlei Nature Reserve in collaboration with a team from Nature Connect.
“For this Mandela Day we did one of our first activations to do our bit towards making a difference with a one-night camp on Friday 15 July.
“The theme was ‘Girl, let your light shine’ and our objective was to empower young girls to allow their light to shine and to elevate their confidence within themselves and therefore inspiring others to do the same.”
She added that the night was packed with fun activities from team building and conversations covering bullying and social issues to an educational movie night and modelling competition.
“Our vision for SWF is aimed at serving women and children in South Africa and we believe that through sharing our stories and building a community, we will be able to empower those who need it to thrive and rise above the circumstances thrown at them – this includes unemployment, gender-based violence and other socio-economic issues.
“This opportunity was made possible through the help of our donors – coming from our own communities who donated from the kindness of their heart and our various partners.”
Senior pastor Desray van Rensburg from the New Hope Church SA also delivered an inspirational talk while Ward 68 councillor Marita Petersen supported the organisation with a goodie bag filled with much needed essential items.
Cindy Jacobs, SWF co-founder, said it was important to be your authentic self.
“It is through exposure, sisterhood and being your authentic self that one can set the world alight. I am excited to grow our sisterhood community and take it to a whole new level.
“Coming up in August, we hope to do the same for women of our communities where they can gather and speak about topics that affect them and grow a community of stronger women.”
