Shrieks of excitement echoed through the hallways of Levana Primary School in Lavender Hill on Wednesday 3 April, as the Easter bunny arrived spreading joy and Easter eggs.
The school was one of 10 primary schools to receive more than 8 000 Easter eggs in a partnership between Living through Learning, a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), Coronation Fund Managers and RoomRaccoon.
Amy Lategan, head of fund-raising at Living Through Learning, explained:
“We are handing out 8 850 Easter eggs, spread among 10 schools in the north and south, with Levana Primary school receiving 1 130 Easter eggs,” she said.
“We also have the Easter bunny with us, who is going around the school to create fun in the classroom.”
The Easter eggs were distributed to primary schools including Perivale, Lotus River and Hillwood.
“It’s always nice to bring a bit of fun to the schools and that is our aim,” said Lategan.
Established in 2012, Living Through Learning is currently working with nine schools after implementing a reading adventure classroom in Grade R classes at each school.
“We have a dedicated reading adventure room where we do our literacy programmes. A facilitator integrates our programme with the government curriculum and the facilitator is there to implement our programmes and to provide assistance in the classroom.”
School principal Shamiega Charity said their partnership with the NPO is much needed in the community.
“It provides our children not only with reading skills but also provides a new innovative way for our teachers to teach,” she noted.
“They always arrive with resources and fun activities for the kids.”
She added that the programmes cultivated a love for reading among learners.
“It teaches our children to create a love for reading and in terms of a holistic partnership, they also have holiday programmes that create a safe haven for our learners and other schools in Lavender Hill.”
