CAPE TOWN-The public is encouraged to attend an art exhibition that is currently underway in Noordhoek at Longbeach Mall.
The Earth Art: Saving the planet one brushstroke at a time, officially started on Tuesday 2 September and will run until Monday 1 October, said founder Irene Oxley.
She is also the president of the South African Society of Artists.
This year’s exhibition is showcasing artworks from over 20 artists across the Western Cape.
Oxley believes that by curating art exhibitions in selected shopping malls she is taking the art to the people and says “not everyone wants to visit a gallery”.
When she curates she says she likes to include a worthy cause and create awareness.
“I invited Greenpeace to join me, the theme Earth Art covers many things. The emphasis this time is save our oceans by ridding the planet of plastic,” she says.
She has commissioned a two-metre octopus made from recycled materials. The octupus went on display yesterday (8 September).
Her last exhibition was WWF SA and Save the Bee’s.
“There are over 40 local upcoming and professional artists as well as local schools that are displaying their artworks at the Earth Art Exhibition,” she said.
One of the artists, Raine Parsons, is from Imhoff’s Gift. She is a full-time artist and loves pottery and heard about the exhibition on Zone Radio.
“I’m inspired by beautiful colours and paint twice a week and I’m now concentrating on portraits,” she says.
Parsons has exhibited at the George museum, Kirstenbosch and at the Marc Aleander Gallery. She paints in acrylic and oil and paints subjects that will bring joy to the viewer.
Parsons can’t say how long it takes to paint as it’s finished when it’s finished, she is always planning on new art pieces, especially her portraits.
