As schools close for the festive season, Ikamva Labantu is urging South Africans to invest in early childhood development (ECD), highlighting its critical role in shaping a child’s future learning, behaviour, and health.
Research shows the first five years of life are crucial, yet about 350 000 four-year-olds in South Africa roughly 29% have no access to early learning. Even when children attend preschools, many in township communities face poorly resourced classrooms and untrained teachers.
Ikamva Labantu’s experiential training programme equips ECD principals and teachers through hands-on learning at its model preschool. Community-based workers also provide ongoing support in local classrooms, while a registration helpdesk guides preschools on compliance and accessing government subsidies.
“Ishrene Davids, Ikamva Labantu’s Director, knows firsthand the impact of a dedicated teacher. Raised on the Cape Flats after her family’s forced removal during Apartheid, she credits teachers who recognised her potential with shaping her future,” the organisation said.
Davids emphasises “A child’s opportunity for education should never depend on luck or chance.
Every child deserves a path , and someone to help them believe they can take it.”
Investing in early childhood development not only gives children a strong educational foundation but also strengthens South Africa’s future workforce, creating leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
This festive season, Ikamva Labantu is calling on South Africans to give the gift of quality early learning. Every donation helps equip educators and improve township preschools.
