Dumping problem gets the fix

Residents and volunteers have joined local Ward 82 councillor Washiela Harris in tackling the consistent dumping issue in the area.

Tafelsig and its vast open land parcels have become an eyesore as a result of constant dumping.

These plots will see litter, dead animals, building rubble and other household waste dumped daily, in some cases.

Harris has been advocating against the illegal dumping since taking office in 2019.

She says with constant intervention, the problem is slowly, but surely improving.

Recently, with the help of volunteers and City officials, three hotspots were cleared.

These are situated in Paulsberg, Dolomites streets and near the Thusong Centre.

“Dumping at these hotspots is done on a regular basis,” says Harris. “If we get the residents involved they will take ownership as they strive for a cleaner community. We need residents to keep the dumpers accountable.”

Harris has also encouraged residents to report dumpers to the City through its rewards programme.

“I hope for a cleaner Tafelsig. Yes, it will continue thus changing residents mindset of not dumping,” she says. “Residents please stop with the dumping. The dumpers are disrespecting the residents who have to live with the foul smell, flies, rats, mice and the germs that goes with it. Lets together make Tafelsig a cleaner place we can all be proud of.”
