A Kensington-based motorcycle repair shop is on a mission to ensure a group of learners can start the academic year with stationery supplies for the year, but they need help to achieve this.
Urban Racing Bike shop in partnership with The Freedom Riders Mcc Cape Town aims to collect stationery supplies for Kids Can, After School Care and Learning Centre based in Kleinmond in the Overberg.
Lee Peters, co-owner of the store, says they started with the initiative last year and this year they hope to match their target.
She explains that the aim is to ease the financial burden on parents.
“The school has about 65 kids from disadvantaged backgrounds that need assistance. We decided to get involved and we started this last year, where we makeup stationery packs and then we donate the packs to the kids.”
She explains that last year, they handed over about R15 000 worth of stationery.
“They were so appreciative of our assistance, in November last year they called me to say the kids are now using the last of their stationery, so it lasted them the entire year.
“We are in need of reams of paper, pencils, crayons, rulers and flip files. All the standard stationery that learners need daily.”
On Saturday 28 January, a group of riders will congregate at the Kensington Civic Centre at 08:00 and drive through to Kleinmond to deliver the donations.
“We will do a mass drive from Kensington where we will do the handover in Kleinmond. At the school, we will interact with the kids and the teachers and fellowship with them.”
Peters says all donations are welcome.
“We are calling on people to donate what they can. On Saturday people can come to the civic centre as well to bring their donations, the support would be appreciated. They can contact me to arrange deliveries.”
