Back to school was made a bit easier for Tafelsig parents, thanks to Serve the Needy.

The non-profit organisation (NPO) handed over basic stationery packs to learners from the area. The NPO received 45 packs to distribute to needy learners.

During a leisure bus trip to Mossel Bay arranged for the community by the organisation last year, a few of these packs were donated along with other items as part of an outreach to the needy in this area.

Albert Solomons, chair of the organisation, says the need in Mossel Bay is also quite high.

“They never get funding or donations like that, so we gave packs to Grade Rs,” Solomons says.

The packs were donated to the organisation by former Mayor Dan Plato. These were handed over to the NPO by Ward 82 councillor, Washiela Harris, on Plato’s behalf. “The children were identified by the needs of the family,” he says.

Many of the children are known to the organisation through their feeding initiative.

The organisation runs a feeding scheme from the New Apostolic Church in Kilimanjaro Street. The scheme officially launched in 2020.

The packs were distributed on Monday 17 January, two days before the start of the current academic year.

“It was really well received and they were happy with the packs,” he says.

The children are from all over the Tafelsig area.

“The need is so huge and we would love to do this again next year. There is such a great need that parents came after to also ask for packs,” he says. “It brings us great joy to see to the need of the community.”
