Dignity, sanitation for homeless in Cape Town

Giving the homeless dignity is something most take for granted, is the premise of an initiative launched to serve this community.

Launched in July last year, Viva Con Agua’s mobile showers and toilet facilities, called Nina Manzi, were designed specifically for use by homeless people.

These roving facilities give them a safe and private place to clean themselves.

As part of a partnership with various organisations, the facilities were first placed at the U-Turn premises in Claremont, said Nina Manzi project manager Evert van Noordwyk. “Now we are currently based in Salt River, operating from there everyday,” he said. “Our main funding source is Viva Con Agua Germany, but we do source and raise funds from wherever possible.”

Van Noordwyk pointed out that the service rendered to the homeless was crucial in restoring their dignity. “The main thing is to provide such dignity to the homeless community and give them what we take for granted everyday – a hot shower.”

Over 2 700 hot showers have been provided to homeless residents this year alone. “We partner with other organisations,” Van Noordwyk said. “We aim to partner with other NPOs that also provide a service. We see ourselves as a bolt-on. We benefit the organisation, but also provide a great service in return.”

The organisation works toward water and sanitation accessibility for all as a basic human right. They also run several other initiatives in line with this philosophy.
