Following a lengthy battle in the hospital, the sixth child involved in the horror scholar transport crash on AZ Berman Drive on Tuesday 30 May has passed away.
A bakkie transporting six primary school learners and one high school learner to several schools in the area lost control after allegedly running a red traffic light. Children were flung from the bakkie.
Two children were rushed to hospital from the scene, with one having been released from Mitchell’s Plain Hospital shortly after receiving medical treatment. Five primary school learners died on impact.
The sixth child, a 15-year-old Lentegeur High School learner passed away on Thursday 6 July after 36 days in hospital.
The driver, Mninikhaya Goodman Mvuli (55), was arrested on charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving.
Ward 116 councillor and Subcouncil 12 chair Solomon Philander delivered a gift to the boy while still at hospital. The plush toy was left at one of the memorials hosted by the Mitchell’s Plain community.
“The funeral will be held in Queenstown. The family will need time this weekend to arrange everything,” says Philander.
“It is with great sadness that the sixth child passed away in hospital 36 days after the tragic accident that occurred. I hereby convey my condolences to the family and wish them strength during this time of bereavement.”
At his last court appearance, Mvuli expressed his intention to apply for bail after appointing his lawyer earlier in June, this will be opposed by the state.
