With 42,6% of the vote, the Democratic Alliance’s Deidrée Carol de Vos has won the Ward 30 by-election in Manenberg.

On Wednesday 20 November 5 853 of the more than 16 900 registered voters headed to the polls to cast their vote for one of the nine contesting candidates, with De Vos receiving 2 459 votes. A total of 81 votes were spoilt.

The position was made vacant in August by the death of former councillor Bonita Jacobs, elected in the 2021 local government elections.

Ahead of the election, De Vos said: “I feel deeply for the struggles of our community. Every person deserves dignity, opportunity, and safety, yet so many in our area are denied even the basics. Through years of community service I’ve witnessed firsthand the resilience of our people, and I am determined to amplify their voices and bring lasting change to our neighbourhoods.”

Her top three priorites will be access to basic services, strengthening community safety and support for vulnerable families facing food insecurity, inadequate housing and other hardships.
