Vaccine hesitancy in the Klipfontein Mitchell’s Plain Substructure (KMPSS) remains high.

Recently, the Western Cape Provincial Parliament hosted a stakeholder engagement with residents of the Mitchell’s Plain area to address concerns around vaccinations.

The aim of the meeting was to engage with residents on the importance of vaccinations and dispel any myths or answer questions from the community.

With the department of health present, it was revealed that the servicing around 1,3 million people in the KPMSS according to population data, Covid-19 has remained a concern for the department.

By Friday 10 June, there had been 22 165 deaths in the substructure.

In addition, 218 health care workers in the area had also died as a result of the disease with 16 369 infections recorded over the past to years.

In the Klipfontein area, there is an overall vaccination rate of 52,56%. This represents 173 282 people in the area registered to be vaccinated over the age of 12.

In the Mitchell’s Plain area this number is much lower at 33,94%. This represents 169 510 registrations.

Vaccine hesitancy is most common among the youth population, officials advise.
