Two Steenberg Police officers walked away with the coveted titles of Man of the Year and Detective Employee of the Year at the City of Cape Town District awards.
The ceremony, that was held in September, saw Sgt Luqmaan Adams walk away as Man of the Year and detective Sgt Marc Lucas as top detective.
Gavin Walbrugh, chair of the Steenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), says the achievements of the “dedicated officers” were well-deserved.
“We are very happy that they could be recognised for their work.”
He describes Adams as someone with “a quiet persona” who is very involved with the youth and schools in the area.
“We are glad that he was chosen as the man of the year because he is the social crime officer and very involved with the community as well as training youth in the cadettes.
“These awards (are) also something positive for Steenberg police.”
Walbrugh describes Lucas as a dedicated officer who is known for achieving positive convictions in the area.
“He ensures that convictions have been attained and we are very happy with his work.”
Lucinda Evans, former CPF chair and founder of the Philisa Abafazi Bethu Family Centre, said it is important to give credit where it is due.
“It has been a long time since we could say something positive about Steenberg police. More than a year ago, I was one of the lead organisers to march to get rid of the then station commander and morale at the station was very low.
“As a community leader, I am usually harsh in my critique when it comes to safety because community safety is a priority.
“But I want to say thanks to these two officers.”
She added that all officers are faced with heavy case loads and should be commended for their hard work.
“I want to say thanks to all members of Steenberg police, to those who are unseen and did not receive an award. We acknowledge their contributions.”
When People’s Post reached out to station commander Col Hannes Nel, who was appointed as commander at Steenberg Police Station in December last year, he said: “All I can comment is that every employer has to give recognition to its members who perform because that will inspire others to perform well.”
