A Constantia couple were robbed at gunpoint by suspects pretending to be from a local refuse-bin cleaning service in Constantia on Thursday (5 May).
According to Diep River Police Station, officers responded to the house robbery in Petricia Road.
Constable Zak Marais, the spokesperson for Diep River Police Station, says the complainant was at home with her husband and domestic worker when the doorbell rang.
“The door was opened for a local refuse-bin cleaning service as they usually come to clean the dustbin on this day. The complainant questioned the number of workers on the property as they are usually only two or three workers at any given time. The workers alleged that they were new to the company and asked for cold water,” he says.
According to Marais, the complainant then went back inside the house to fetch two bottles of cold water.
The so-called “worker” then left only to return seconds later with others dressed in masks, green overalls and armed with a firearm, which was pointed at the complainant.
“The complainant screamed for her husband as he was in the shower at the time. The suspects then forcefully tied up the complainant, her husband and domestic worker and demanded access to their safe.”
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken, as were cellphones and keys with a gate remote. The suspects then fled the scene. Marais says no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
“A case of house robbery was registered and is being investigated,” he says.
