Comedians unite for dementia unit

Local comedians are teaming up for an evening of laughter to help raise much needed funds for a dementia unit at the Kensington Home for the Aged.

The event will take place in Zouke Bar in Kensington on Tuesday 26 April starting at 20:30.

Resident and comedian Eugene Mathews says he was approached by the home for assistance and decided to organise the event.

“I’ve been wanting to put together a comedy show in Kensington for the longest time, but I didn’t want to do it unless it meant something. My good friend Helen (Louis) spoke to me about the needs of Kensington Home and that prompted us to put together a comedy fundraiser.”

Mathews says Punchlines Fundraising in association with Zouke are curating the comedy show.

Helen Louis, Arts and Crafts Coordinator at the home, says there is a massive need for the unit as they have several residents suffering from dementia.

“We have 90 residents at the home and most of them have dementia. So the funds will go towards buying much needed equipment for the unit.”

Mona Angus, Interim Manager at the home, says: “What we need for the unit are things like a safety gate, plastic chairs, medicine trolley, filing cabinet and some bedding.”

Mathews says people can look forward to performances by himself, Yaaseen Barnes, Dalin Oliver and Tumi Mkha’.

“This show promises to be one filled with big laughs from the first minute followed by a party afterwards. We will have popular DJ Jerome Davidson known as DJ Cool J that will be on the decks. So, people can come out and dance and the following day is a public holiday. Food will be on sale and the menu will be released closer to the time,” explains Mathews. V Tickets costs R60 and only 150 tickets are available. To purchase tickets WhatsApp or call Eugene on 0679384365.
