Despite being the youngest club, Zandvlei Athletics Club in Muizenberg has consistently entered the largest number of juniors in the Western Province Athletics’ (WPA) cross-country league series including the one Little Athletics event.

And according to the club’s secretary, Vinola Jacobs, the 65-strong club includes 26 learners aged nine to 17 from disadvantaged backgrounds, mostly in need of kits. “The founders noted a need for a club that would serve both serious and leisure runners and even walkers, but opted to cater for young, school-going runners, especially from disadvantaged areas such as Vrygrond, Lavender Hill, Cafda, Steenberg and the like.”

The club that was officially registered with WPA in August caters for runners and walkers in Muizenberg and the surrounding areas of Vrygrond, Lavender Hill, Cafda and Steenberg.

“We cater for all age groups, and the gear we need is for our 26 juniors in the club, ranging in age from nine to 17. All from the underprivileged areas.”

The club has organised a karaoke event on Friday 15 December at the Zandvlei Lookout in Promenade Road, Zandvlei to raise funds to purchase their junior runners athletics gear, such as running vests, black shorts, running shoes and socks.

Prizes at the event include a Red Bus city sightseeing tour for two adults and two children, a R500 meal voucher from a top eatery and a voucher for a haircut at a local barber/hairdresser. Tickets cost R20.
