Half a decade in service is a milestone the Lions Club of Mitchell’s Plain will celebrate later this week.
Officially launched on 6 October 2017, the club has continued the global legacy of charity and giving back to the community they serve.
Bevil Lakay, chair of marketing and communication, says since inception, the club has seen a decline in member numbers as a result of various factors.
“The Lions Club of Mitchell’s Plain was charted on 6 October 2017 with 49 members. We currently have 15 members,” he says, adding that their newest member was inducted on Saturday 10 September.
Lakay says before the Covid-19 pandemic started, the club mainly focused on hunger alleviation and diabetes awareness.
“Since then, we have been concentrating on alleviating hunger in our communities. One of our signature projects is still to provide baby boxes to moms at the Midwife Obsterics Unit.
“These boxes include items for the baby and the mom,” he says.
The club constantly accepts new members and is affiliated to the international Lions organisation along with many others in Cape Town.
“Our five-year anniversary is really a big milestone for us as a Lions Club and we could not do it without the assistance of our sponsors, the community and our fellow Lions. We will be having a day of fellowship with our fellow Lions clubs throughout Cape Town to celebrate our anniversary at Wynberg Park on Saturday 8 October,” he says.
“A big thank you to all those supporting us as a club, without your help we cannot help others.”
