The chapel on Main Road in Lakeside is celebrating a very special milestone this September with centenary celebrations planned throughout the month.

While the chapel is currently known as the Mountain View Baptist Church it actually first started out as a Sunday school back in 1922.

Alexis Hallgreen-Pauli, who is on the planning committee for the centenary celebrations, explains that there was a need for a Sunday school in the area which prompted the building of the chapel.

“The chapel, situated on the corner of Putter Street and Main Road Lakeside, was built in 1922 to accommodate a Sunday school that was started by Katie and Emma Hendrikse.

“The Sunday School flourished and as the years passed a ministry to the developing youth of the area was introduced as another ministry of the Christian Brethren Church.”

She adds that the Christian Brethren Church continued their ministry to the Lakeside community until 1997 when they sold the chapel to the Mountain View Baptist Church.

“The Mountain View Baptist Church continues to minister the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ to the local and surrounding communities.”

In light of the milestone, the community is invited to its centenary celebrations.

“Our chapel is turning 100 years old this year, therefore the current church in the building, Mountain View Baptist Church, has organised a month of events that will take place throughout September to celebrate this wonderful milestone.

“On Sunday 25 September there will be a centenary service held at the Lakeside chapel, Mountain View Baptist Church, at 09:30,” said Hallgreen-Pauli.
