Re-Imagine! RePurpose! ReDiscover Your Library.

This is the theme of the 2022 library week which started across the city last week.

Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre Library took this theme and created a unique environment no one would expect.

Usually a place of silence, on Wednesday 16 March, the library was transformed into a mini-concert hall with jazzy music, cover ballads, author interactions and comedy.

Librarian Hadjira Sydow says aside from the amnesty period for overdue books, the library had planned a host of activities.

On Thursday 17 March, the library hosted an outdoor poetry jam, with local artists performing, an eating contest and other activities to re-imagine what the libraries are and how they are used.

“Did you ever think you would come to the library and see a concert?” she jokingly asked those in the audience on Wednesday.

Sydow says the main aim of this campaign is to change the way locals interact and use the libraries in their area.

South African Library week is observed annually by City libraries, with the 2022 instalment observed between Monday 14 and Sunday 20 March.
