A 35-year-old man suspected of drunk driving was released on bail following his arrest in Newlands on Saturday 3 February.

This comes after a Land Rover and Volkswagen collided on the corner of Kildare Road and Main Street around 15:00, leading to a secondary crash into a nearby Italian restaurant. This disastrous motor accident marked a near miss as no deaths and only minor injuries were recorded.

The initial collision sent the two vehicles over the curb of the traffic circle located on Kildare Road before making impact with the adjacent building.

This was confirmed by Claremont police’s Vispol commander Lt Col Marnus Fourie: “The 35-year-old male driver was arrested on the scene for reckless and negligent driving and suspected drunken driving.”

A local source said the crash caused damage to the railing outside the restaurant, shattering the property’s glass door.

The man was detained at Claremont police station before being released on court bail, or “after hours bail application” later that same day.

Fourie further confirmed damage was sustained to both vehicles and property. A local source, who wished to remain anonymous, told People’s Post the driver of the Volkswagen was a woman who sustained injuries to her chest, “while the male driver just had cuts to his temple and a black eye. His passenger was taken to hospital for further treatment.”

He also said the crash caused damage to the railing outside the restaurant, shattering the glass door. “Luckily nobody was sitting outside at the tables,” he added.

The man is due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on a future date.
