Five months after Ward 64 councillor Aimee Kuhl resigned, Deep South residents have the opportunity to vote for a candidate of their choice tomorrow (19 June).
Kuhl left office in January to pursue a career in education.
Almost a month after voting in the national and provincial elections, Ward 64 residents will be casting their votes again, this time in a by-election.

The ward will be contested by the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Registered voters from Ward 64 – Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, St James, Muizenberg, Lakeside, and Marina da Gama – in possession of either a green barcoded ID book, Smartcard ID or temporary identity certificate are eligible to vote.
People’s Post interviewed all three candidates ahead of tomorrow’s voting.
ANC candidate Paul Davids, a father of two and grandfather of three from Fish Hoek, says he knows the importance of building a strong community for families to thrive. “From factory floors to boardrooms and townships, I’ve dedicated my life to building a better South Africa,” he tells the People’s Post.
He left the private sector in 1993 to “help prepare for the first democratic elections”, says Davids.
“Following the historic 1994 elections, I found myself in the heart of it all, the constitutional assembly, laying the foundation for our new South Africa.”
Since then, he has taken on various roles in the community, cabinet and parliament.
“These experiences have given me a unique perspective, a deep understanding of both the public and private sectors, their strengths, and their shortcomings,” he says. “Now, here we stand, at a crossroads. Let’s join hands, not just with this ward but with the entire country to build a thriving community where everyone, my family, yours, and all of us – can truly thrive.”
DA candidate Izabel Sherry, a mother of two originally from Durban, worked hand in hand as an assistant to Kuhl.
“Being the assistant has been such an advantage as it has given me insight to the area of their needs and concerns,” she tells the People’s Post.
Passionate about the environment, safety and working together Sherry says her main goal is to have a safe, clean and well run ward.
“My passion is safety and working together with the communities… together we can combat crime and ensure we remain a tourist destination.”
EFF candidate Tougheeda Jacobs, who hails from Muizenberg, comes from a modelling and hospitality background.
“I worked in the hospitality industry in guest relations, meeting people from all walks of life,” says.
Jacobs hopes to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.
“I grew up in the apartheid era and know it all by heart, well informed with politics but always in the background,” she says. “I want to go the extra mile and try to organise youth programmes especially for those who are unemployed.”
Jacobs adds that her passions include working with people.
“I am passionate about being there for people, especially the ones who struggle,” she says. “I am a strong woman and not afraid to take on anything that comes my way.”
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), there are 20 207 registered voters in the Ward.
Voting will take place at Muizenberg High School, Zandvlei Imperial Yacht Sport Club, Kalk Bay community centre, Fish Hoek Civic Centre, Fish Hoek Primary School, False Bay College Fish Hoek and Muizenberg Civic Centre.
