Cape Town residents have every reason to beam with pride after the Mother City was crowned the happiest on the continent.
The city has secured bragging rights as Africa’s most joyful destination, ranking third globally in Time Out’s 2025 Happiest Cities Index. The Mother City beat every other African destinations to claim the top continental spot, with an impressive 97% of locals saying their city brought them happiness.
The international recognition comes from a comprehensive survey of more than 18 000 people worldwide, who were asked about how their cities make them feel. Cape Town’s stellar performance saw it outshine major global destinations to land in the world’s top three, trailing only Abu Dhabi in the UAE (first place) and Medellín in Colombia (second place).
Rounding out the top five happiest cities globally were Mexico City in fourth place and Mumbai, India, claiming fifth position.
What makes Cape Town special?
The survey highlighted several factors that contribute to Cape Town’s feel-good factor, including the city’s pristine Blue Flag beaches, spectacular natural scenery, vibrant arts and culture scene, and exceptional food offerings.
“Just how happy are your fellow neighbours?” the question was posed, to a resounding reply “Very!”, capturing the infectious positivity that seems to permeate the Mother City.
Time Out’s findings suggest Capetonians have discovered the secret to urban contentment, one cheeky observation noting, “Who needs therapy, when you’ve got Table Mountain and a decent Pinotage, right!?”
A city that keeps residents smiling
The recognition reflects what many locals have long known, that Cape Town offers a unique quality of life that combines natural beauty with cultural richness. From the iconic silhouette of Table Mountain to the world-class wine estates on the city’s doorstep Cape Town continues to captivate both residents and visitors alike.
