It was a nail-biting final as Cape Town Spurs made several attempts at goal during the match on Saturday 1 July, against defending champions, Stellenbosch FC.

With a 0-all draw by the blow of the final whistle in regulation time, extra time also ended goalless, forcing a penalty shoot-out. In the end, Spurs took the cup.

Mark Rodrigues, chair of host Bayview FC and tournament director, says the tournament went off without a hitch. “It was probably the easiest one we have done so far,” he says.

Cape Town Spurs won the Platinum section.

Milano won the gold section.

This is the 10th anniversary of the tournament, which has grown exponentially, cultivating and promoting youth soccer in the metro.

Work is already underway for the next cup, which will kick off in June next year.

“We want to make the tournament bigger (next year). We want to explore the opportunity of getting an international team – not only Namibia – but maybe England or overseas and get a team from that side to come to Cape Town,” says Rodrigues.

Play-offs for next year will run around October or November this year and will be travelling to various venues in the metro.

South African Football Association (SAFA) Cape Town president and national vice president Bennett Bailey says this was a great display of football.

“You are in a young age group. This must be the start of greater things for you and football. I want to congratulate each and everyone who took the time to attend this tournament but to also tell the world that football is alive and well,” he says.

“You kept the flag flying high, not only for Mitchell’s Plain but for SAFA Cape Town as well,” says Kruger. “It is wonderful to see the trophy staying in Cape Town, but next year it must stay in Mitchell’s Plain.”

Winners of the Platinum section won R15 000, with runners-up receiving R6 000 and R1 000 each for the third and fourth prizes. First and second place in this section also got a new sponsored soccer gear kit.
