A 40-year-old man has been arrested for possession of drugs worth R18 million, stashed at a storage facility in Roeland Street, Cape Town, on Tuesday 10 June.
Members of the Anti-Gang Unit, Crime Intelligence and Provincial Organised Crime Detectives acted on information of drugs and firearms being stored at the facility.
Capt FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson, said the officers conducted a search of the unit and discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15 kg (1 kg each) with an estimated street value of R18 million as well as one AK 47 rifle, an Uzzi, five 9 mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.
Van Wyk said the suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court once charged for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and dealing in drugs.
The Police Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt-Gen (Adv) TE Patekile, praised the integrated effort that led to the discovery of the drugs and firearms, and said if these had landed in the wrong hands they could well have exacerbated the havoc in communities where gangs and gun violence run rife.
“The police remain resolute in eradicating drug abuse and the prevalence of firearms, which pose a threat to the safety of communities in the Western Cape.”
