Cape Muslim Vigilance Association is hoping to raise R250 000 during the Month of Ramadan to settle the debt owed to the City of Cape Town for arrears on rates (water and electricity).

With Eid ul-Fitr celebrated on Monday, the Cape Muslim Vigilance Association in Bega Road, Wynberg is hoping to raise R250 000 to settle the debt owed to the City of Cape Town for arrears on rates (water and electricity).

The Cape Muslim Vigilance Association (CMVA) has long been a philanthropic and altruistic institution, established to serve the Retreat, Grassy Park, Wynberg and surrounding communities on a non-profit basis.

“Our mission is to restore the Vigilance to its former glory by strengthening its role as a community hub, providing essential services, educational programmes and a space for unity and upliftment.

“As the newly appointed executive of the Cape Muslim Vigilance Association we inherited the debt and therefore appeal to the public to raise the necessary funds,” Shamiel Domingo, chair of the organisation, said. “By settling the debt it will allow us to move forward with much-needed maintenance and restoration of the building, ensuring it continues to serve the community.

“Most of our members are from Wynberg, with a few individuals also involved in their own NPOs and charitable initiatives. However, all our members have strong historical ties to the Cape Muslim Vigilance Association and are deeply committed to giving back to the community of Wynberg, ensuring the sustainability of this institution.”

“Our target is R250 000, which we hope to raise during the month of Ramadan 2025.

“Settling this debt will enable us to focus on the urgent restoration and maintenance of the Vigilance, ensuring it remains a safe and functional space for the community.

“As a newly-appointed executive, this will be our first formal Ramadan Appeal to the public. While previous committees may have had different initiatives, our immediate focus is on securing financial stability for the Vigilance and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“We sincerely appreciate this opportunity to share our cause and would be grateful for any support in spreading awareness about the Ramadan Appeal.”
