Around 60 young people from Lotus River, Grassy Park, Athlone, Heideveld, Kuils River, Kraaifonten, Elsies River and Ravensmead will participate in the stage production of Given to Fly, produced by Project021, a non-profit organisation (NPO) aimed at promoting the arts and creative expression.

The initiative was founded by David Cornelson and officially registered in February 2013. Some of their successes include performances at the Baxter Zabalaza festival and producing several theatre productions.

Given to Fly will be on stage on Freedom Day, Wednesday 27 April at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. Some of the cast members have been with the NPO from a young age and have grown in their confidence, both in performance as well as their personal lives.

The production hopes to bring a greater awareness to the social ills that exist in communities, as well as showing that people’s living conditions do not define their future.

This production tells the story of a not so typical Cape Flats family. Five daughters who are “given to fly” with their father Sidney who is scarred by the hurts and disappointments of an oppressive past.

Brenda, the mother, and pillar of strength in the household provides the sanity which is much needed in a family, where their five daughters, each with their individual personalities are not afraid to speak their minds.

While addressing relevant social issues the production is also filled with lots of humour, street-wise wit, and high-energy drama suitable for the whole family.

Tickets for the show are available online via Webtickets.
