In an inspiring collaboration, the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) joined forces with the Wynberg Library to host a crucial talk aimed at empowering caregivers and cancer survivors.

The event, which took place on Thursday 3 October, drew a diverse audience of caregivers, survivors and residents eager to learn about cancer support resources and share their experiences.

The session featured Adeba Steenkamp, a counsellor from Cansa, who opened the discussion by emphasizing the importance of education and support in the fight against cancer. “Understanding cancer and its impact on both patients and caregivers is vital. Our goal is to provide resources that empower individuals to navigate this journey,” Steenkamp stated, highlighting the association’s commitment to community outreach.

Throughout the event, caregivers shared their experiences, offering insights into the challenges and rewards of supporting loved ones with cancer.

Anna Steyn, a caregiver, expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the support networks available.

“Being a caregiver can be overwhelming at times, but knowing that there are resources and people who understand what we’re going through makes a huge difference. Events like this provide us with valuable information and a sense of community,” she said.

Experiences

The presence of cancer survivors further enriched the discussion.

Elaine Matthews, a survivor who attended the talk, shared her journey with cervical cancer and the significance of community support in recovery. “It’s crucial for us to speak out about our experiences. It helps not just ourselves but also those who are currently fighting their battles. We need to remind each other that we are not alone,” she remarked.

Library staff member Rene Hermon also played a crucial role in facilitating the event. “The Wynberg Library is committed to serving as a community hub for important conversations like this. We believe in providing a space where individuals can come together to learn, share and grow,” Hermon explained.

Her passion for community engagement shone through, as she encouraged attendees to utilise resources for further information on cancer support and wellness.

The session covered various topics, including coping strategies for caregivers, available resources for cancer patients, and the importance of mental health during treatment.

CANSA’s mission to provide comprehensive care was echoed throughout the discussions, reinforcing the need for continuous education and support in the community.

As the talk came to a close, those who attended left with a renewed sense of hope and empowerment. The collaboration between CANSA and the library fostered connections and provided essential information to those affected by the condition. In a world where the impact of cancer is felt deeply, events like these highlight the power of community and the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences.

As Steenkamp aptly summarised: “Together, we can build a strong network of support that empowers both caregivers and survivors. Every story shared brings us one step closer to a world where no one has to face cancer alone.”

For those seeking further information or support, CANSA encourages individuals to visit their website or contact local offices for resources tailored to their needs.
