A water pipe burst left an enormous sinkhole in Main Road, Lakeside, on Tuesday 25 January, causing water disruptions and traffic delays.
The area was temporarily cordoned off while City of Cape Town workers took several hours to replace and repair the original pipe.
Areas affected included Muizenberg, Lakeside and parts of Kalk Bay.
While the water supply was down residents came up with creative ideas on where to shower.
Glendyr du Preez wrote in a Facebook post that it would probably be wise to shower at the gym.
“No water . . . Good excuse to go to gym . . . shower there.”
Another resident was concerned after being without water for hours.
Gazelle Swanepoel wrote: “Does anyone have any idea when the water situation will be sorted (anyone living near the sink hole)? We have been without water for ages.”
Nicola Jordan wrote that water supply was affected in Kalk Bay.
“Saw that it will effect water supply all the way to Kalk Bay. Hopefully back up by this evening.”
Rosemarie Graham added that there was no water supply in Lincoln Road, Lakeside, while another resident commented that the water in their area was brown.
The City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation Zahid Badroodien said a 300 mm water pipe was shut down in the early hours of Tuesday.
“On the morning of Tuesday 25 January at 04:00 we shut the 300 mm water pipe in the Main Road in Lakeside opposite the fire station due to a pipe burst.
“The burst caused a sinkhole in the road, and our operational teams barricaded the affected area and diverted traffic accordingly.”
He added that the water supply was restored at 22:00 on Tuesday evening.
“Just after the water supply was restored, it emerged that the Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) feeding the area experienced a fault, and this created high pressures in the area.
“This resulted in a consequential burst of a 100 mm diameter pipe in Iron Road in Lakeside.
The subsequent pipe burst was repaired at 13:00 on Wednesday,” said Badroodien.
