The Lions Club of Tokai spread festive cheer to the Tygerberg Hospital Children’s Ward on Thursday 12 December, with a dual initiative that combined the distribution of Christmas gift bags with the unveiling of a newly upgraded waiting area.

Mark Rossouw, media chair of the Lions Club of Tokai, described the event as a reflection of the club’s dedication to community service. “Christmas is about creating moments of joy, especially for those who need it the most,” said Rossouw. “This initiative was all about bringing smiles to the children’s faces and comfort to their families during a challenging time.”

The highlight of the day was the arrival of Santa Claus, who joined club members in handing out gift bags to the children. Rossouw remarked: “Seeing the excitement and happiness in the children’s eyes was truly heart warming. It reminds us why initiatives like this are so important.”

The upgraded waiting area, completed in October this year, is part of a phased project that the club began in February 2023. “This waiting area isn’t just a functional space; it’s a place that provides warmth and reassurance to families during difficult times,” Rossouw said. “It’s a tangible symbol of our commitment to improving lives.”

The event was attended by three district governors from the Lions, emphasising the significance of the occasion. Rossouw noted: “Having their support today highlighted the collective strength of the Lions organisation. It’s a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.”

The nursing staff at Tygerberg Hospital welcomed the upgrades with enthusiasm.“The new waiting area has made such a difference for both the staff and the families. It’s a much more welcoming and comforting space.”

Rossouw also expressed the club’s gratitude to the hospital management and project team. “This collaboration has been a journey of shared vision and passion. We’re incredibly thankful to the hospital for allowing us to make a difference,” he said.

As the festivities wrapped up, Rossouw reiterated the club’s ongoing commitment to the partnership. “This is just one chapter of our collaboration with Tygerberg Hospital. We look forward to continuing our efforts to bring hope and happiness to the children and families who rely on this ward.”
