Cape Town police have confirmed that a four-year-old boy who was wounded by a stray bullet in Hanover Park earlier this week died in hospital yesterday (9 October).
Sgt Wesley Twigg, provincial police spokesperson, said the boy was shot in Moray Court at around 14:30 on Wednesday 8 October.
Col André Traut, provincial police spokesperson, said swift action by the police led to the arrest of two 17-year-old suspects shortly after the incident.
“Suspects believed to be linked to gang activity opened fire in public, injuring the young child in the process. The victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment. They are currently in custody and will appear in court once they have been charged,” he said.
Twigg confirmed that the suspects will now face a charge of murder.
Western Cape police management has expressed outrage at the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating gangsterism and protecting the most vulnerable members of society.
