With less than a week to go before the closing date for the Blisters for Bread family fun walk, organisers are encouraging participants to enter now to avoid disappointments.

The Peninsula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA) annual charity event hopes to attract 6 000 entrants this year. Entries will close at midnight on Thursday 15 August.

Capetonians are encouraged to come out in numbers and enjoy a family-friendly event on Saturday 25 August, at the Green Point Cricket Club.

Blisters for Bread is not just a walk; it’s a symbol of solidarity and commitment to ensuring that no child goes to school hungry.

This year marks 56 years since its establishment.

PSFA provides daily nutritious cooked meals to about 27 601 learners at 187 educational institutions across the Western Cape.

Petrina Pakoe, director of PSFA, says thanks to generous participants, sponsors and volunteers, PSFA aims to raise awareness of childhood hunger. She adds that all proceeds go towards providing nutritious meals to impoverished children at schools across the province.

“Hundred percent of the entry fees go toward the purchasing of the food for the learners and that enables us to ensure that learners at our schools receive two cooked meals for a year.

She explains that they currently have about 2 000 entries so far and hope to reach their target of 6 000.

“PSFA aims to reduce short-term hunger within schools and increase a learner’s ability to learn. Everything that we receive helps us to be able to feed children at the schools because you cannot teach a hungry child.”

The event, which will start in Stephan Way, Green Point, and end at the Green Point Cricket Club, will include two routes along the scenic Sea Point Promenade, a 10 km walk starting at 07:30 and a 5 km walk starting at 08:15.

Each participant will receive a medal and refreshments sponsored by Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages.

In addition to the walk, participants can look forward to exciting entertainment featuring top Cape Town singer Jarrad Ricketts, food stalls and activities for all ages, making it a perfect morning out for the whole family.

Charles Grey, fundraising manager, says: “We are thrilled to have you join us for Blisters for Bread in association with Lucky Star! Your participation signifies more than just taking steps, it represents hope, community spirit, and the promise of a brighter future for children in need. Thank you for helping PSFA to feed our future.”
