When the first Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk kicked off 57 years ago, Stanley Meiring was only 17 years old. At the time, he could never have imagined that the R158 he raised while walking would help build the foundation for a cause that still changes lives today.
The much-loved event will take place again on Sunday, 31 August at the Green Point Common Sports Ground.
Those wanting to take part should note that registrations close at midnight on Sunday, 17 August.
Now in its 57th year, Blisters for Bread is far more than a walk, it’s a movement. Every year, thousands gather to support the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) in its mission to combat child hunger. The funds raised help provide daily meals to learners across the Western Cape.
Memories from the very first walk
Meiring, now 74, still remembers his first walk vividly.
“I was in matric at the time. We were told we must walk 19 miles (over 30 km) from Simon’s Town to Savio College in Lansdowne. Father Preston said it was for a worthy cause and to raise funds for the Peninsula School Feeding Association.”
Without hesitation, Meiring and his classmates took up the challenge.
“All we were told was to wear comfortable shoes. We didn’t have the fancy shoes available todayjust normal takkies or even school shoes. At 17, you just walk; the distance didn’t matter.”
He proudly recalls raising R158, a significant amount at the time. Together, the group raised a substantial total that marked the start of an enduring tradition.
A golden anniversary reunion
Meiring last took part in 2018, when the event celebrated its 50th anniversary.
“Myself and five other learners from the first walk joined. We only did the 5 km, but it was wonderful to catch up after so many years.”
Encouraging others to participate, Meiring keeps his advice simple:
“Just do it. It’s for a worthy cause.”
