The Cape Town Steelband Festival will take place this coming Saturday (14 May) at the Baxter Concert Hall.
Starting at 15:00, the festival will showcase the talents of 10 bands: Wynberg Boys’ High School, Woodlands Primary School, Vredenburg, Ebenaezer and Môrester Farms, Elkana Childcare (Riverlands), Heideveld Secondary School, Muizenberg Junior School, Hermon, Clanwilliam, Heideveld Primary School and Riebeek Kasteel.
Funds raised by the festival, a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and the Steelband Project, will go towards supporting music projects in communities.
The Steelband Project was founded in 1997 by Liz Brouckaert and David Wickham.
The core focus of the project is to provide quality music education to young people in the Western Cape, with a particular focus on youth in under-resourced communities and “youth-at-risk”.
The project aims to develop the discipline and listening skills required for playing in a band, and to give band members the personal enjoyment and confidence gained from performing in public. The initiative is active in many suburban and township schools as well as with street youth and with young people with learning difficulties.
Festival tickets prices are R100 for adults and R50 for seniors, learners and students.
Tickets are available from WebTickets.
