Thusanang Community Development, a non-profit organisation (NPO), hosted a back-to-school themed event to commemorate Women’s Day at the Tafelsig community hall on Tuesday 9 August.
Founder Beatrice Leng says 50 local women were invited to enjoy an afternoon of fun.
Invited guest speaker Ian Cameron of civil rights organisation Action Society also addressed the women on the topic of gender-based violence (GBV) and their rights.
Leng says they chose the back-to-school theme to empower women and show them it’s never too late to complete your schooling.
“A lot of our women out there did not have proper schooling or had to leave school at an early stage to go work to help parents or siblings,” says Leng.
Founded in 2020, the NPO currently runs six soup kitchens in the Tafelsig area.
“Our aim was to educate our broader community with skills,” she says.
They see to local seniors and also focus on youth development.
“We need to see to the young boys. Most of them are school dropouts or don’t have jobs. Poverty is a concern in the community, that’s why we opened up a feeding kitchen.”
The organisation welcomes donations toward its programmes and feeding kitchens.
