Author Bernadette Kiewiet hosted a book launch event at Mountview High School, returning to her alma mater for the first time since matriculating 44 years ago.

Kiewiet was one of the first learners when the school opened in 1976.

Her aim was to hand over a copy of her book, Life’s Soiled Red Earth, to the school.

Former classmates Fatima Lakay Hill and Lois Petersen shared their journey as former learners with the Grade 11 learners of the school, before Kiewiet read an excerpt from her book.

The book is a romance, based on and inspired by true events of the apartheid-era. It took her around five years to complete, having travelled to the various areas for research.

Kiewiet has hosted various launch events since May (“Author sees apartheid through a different lens”, People’s Post, 2 May).

The book is available in paperback at R285 and in eBook at R89 from Amazon, Goodreads, and the publisher, Austin Macauley.
