The annual Ladles of Love Sarmiethon took place at Makers Landing at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday.

Dozens of volunteers lined up  to help make 70 000 sandwiches. These will be distributed to 140 soup kitchens across the Peninsula.

The sarmiethon coincides with World Sandwich Day, also celebrated today.

A similar event took place simultaneously in Johannesburg.

Their joint target was to reach 100 000 sandwiches, but the group managed to make just over 91 000 sandwiches.

It is estimated that more than 30 million South Africans are food insecure, with 25%  experiencing perpetual hunger.

Mary-Ann Musekiwa, Committee Chair and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Coronation – the headline sponsor for the event – says hunger is a pressing issue in South Africa.

“More than half of the population has become food insecure due to the widening inequality in our society and deepening economic stressor globally,” she says.

Capetonians were asked to sponsor a sandwich at R10 each via the Ladles of Love website.

Danny Diliberto, Ladles of Love founder, says they started the sarmiethon two years ago during the lockdown to supply food to vulnerable communities.

“Since Covid-19 began, we have made 5,4 million sandwiches. We are trying to keep the sandwich drive alive.”

Alistair Laguma, Brand Engagement Coordinator for Blue Ribbon, says the company supplied 7 000 loaves of bread for the event.
