All systems go for the annual minstrel troupes parade in Cape Town

With less than two weeks to go to the annual Tweede Nuwejaar Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade, the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) says all plans are on track.

The colourful parade will take place on Tuesday 2 January in the city centre between Hanover Street in District Six, and Rose Street in the Bo Kaap. The historic event will see 21 minstrel troupes taking to the streets to entertain the thousands of spectators expected to line the streets.

Muneeb Gambeno, Director of KKKA, said they are currently in the process of securing the necessary permits to host the event.

Last year, the association announced that it would be partnering with betting operator, Hollywoodbets, in a three-year deal.

According to Gambeno, the free event starts at noon with the first troupes expected to start at 14:00.

Gambeno says: “We are on track for the event. We are going through the process to secure the necessary permits. The troupes are excited, we are excited. They have been preparing all year long. People can look forward to a well-organized entertaining event.”

He explains that the Hollywoodbets Voorsmakie event to give people some idea of what to expect took place at the Kenilworth Racecourse this past weekend. He says this will be followed by five stadium events taking place in January and February next year.

Gambeno adds: “The Hollywoodbets competition events co-hosted by KKKA at Athlone Stadium will happen every Saturday in January and end the first Saturday in February. The troupes are divided into two sections for competition purposes.”
