Animal rights activists clad in black and wearing masks, stood silently at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg last week as footage of domestic animals being slaughtered in the agriculture industry played on laptop screens, to bring awareness to “animal exploitation”.

Each year, the global animal rights organisation Anonymous for the Voiceless (AV) organises volunteers to participate in The Cube of Truth outreach campaign.

AV Cape Town coordinator Chad Cupido explained that he believed in the rights of all sentient beings. “I believe in the rights of all sentient beings and I know what these animals go through, they are not treated well.

“If we could really see what happens behind the abattoir walls, I think we will all become vegans. Also, 95% of chronic illnesses, if you look at the cause of the illnesses, are diet related.”

During the campaign footage was displayed on screens to the public to educate the community about “animal exploitation”.

“These animals are not treated well; they are given hormones and live in very bad conditions and then they are killed. We eat that and think it is okay. It’s not okay, it is killing us as we are killing them.

“Meat and dairy are killing us, so we have to be a little more conscious of what we are putting into our bodies and how we are treating these sentient beings.”

Cupido, who has been a vegan for seven years, says it is important to be the voice of the voiceless.

“Animals are sentient beings and just like us have central nervous systems so they feel pain.

“Sentient beings mean they can feel pain the way we do, they have emotions and I think they also deserve to be happy like we do. If you take a baby calf away from its mother, it cries just like we would cry, so let’s have a heart and be the voice of the voiceless.”
