The Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) Open Day, a fun-filled family highlight on the calendar, will once again be hosted at the Newlands Fire Base on Saturday 2 December between 09:00 and 16:00.

The day is all about fun activities and raising awareness about wildfire and fynbos.

Fun activities will include abseiling, fire-truck rides, snake display, face-painting, tug-of-war, getting up close with firefighting tools, indoor and outdoor exhibitions, and of course the famous open day foam party.

There are a number of changes to this year’s edition of open day to ensure a fun and safe experience for all:

  • The event is going cashless! You can pay via bank cards and through Snapscan at selected vendors.
  • Compulsory registration and tickets via Quicket.
  • No drop-and-go will be allowed, but there is disabled parking available and the public is encouraged to make use of the parking and free shuttle service at UCT.

For up-to-date information on parking areas, shuttles, activities and updates keep your eyes on the VWS social channels. Those interested are free to invite all your family and friends for a wonderful day out with the kids.

The VWS is a volunteer organisation entirely dedicated to the combating of wildfires in the Table Mountain National Parks (TMNP) and Overberg.

It has over 300 volunteers across four stations and as a non-profit volunteer organisation it needs ongoing funding and relies on donations from the public and businesses to ensure it continues to fight wildfires safely and effectively.

Registration and entry for kids under 16 is free and this year there is a nominal R25 entry fee for adults to assist the VWS with raising funds.
