Residents of Manenberg were thrilled to receive their title deeds confirming their home ownership status on Saturday 16 November.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Carl Pophaim, Mayco member for human settlements, were in the area to hand over title deeds to 42 beneficiary families as part of the City’s ‘No Cost Transfer’ initiative to enable cost-free home ownership for qualifying tenants of City affordable rental apartments.

“It is a special moment to hand over title deeds to enable home ownership for these 42 families who are tenants of City rental units in Manenberg. The families who received their title deeds today represent just some of the thousands of beneficiaries who will receive their title deeds over the coming months. This is so much more than a piece of paper – it is a life-changing document for these families and for future generations, representing not only a home, but an economic asset,” says Hill-Lewis.

“We are proud to create new homeowners in various ways, including state-subsidised housing beneficiaries, tenants who qualify for the No Cost Transfer programme, as well as the residents we help to resolve challenges related to historical title deeds. One title deed at a time, we are enabling redress and economic empowerment for these families.”
