The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS) has sterilised 1 002 domestic animals in a marathon six-month drive which ended in Hanover Park last week.
The campaign, which started on World Spay Day, Tuesday 27 February, ended on a high note on Thursday 15 August.
The team went door to door over the several breeding cycles encouraging animal owners to have their pets sterilised.
“The team, who survived two attempted hijackings for their efforts, had to become quite creative to ensure their safety and the success of the campaign that went ahead despite the odds. These brave animal welfare warriors crossed the finish line exhausted but victorious and optimistic about the future of the community’s pets who benefitted from their tireless efforts,” says Allan Perrins, spokesperson for AWS.
The event will continue in Eerste River this week, where an additional 175 pets are targeted for sterilisation and vaccination.
